A Playground for Curious Minds

The Orkin Discovery Zone is built for active, joyful exploration. Families may dive into themes like biodiversity, classification, biomimicry, communication, and the senses, all through hands-on, inquiry‑based activities which make science feel like play.

Join in the fun by doing one or all of the following:

  • Build their own bug using spinning discs to mix and match heads, thoraxes, and abdomens from different species, a playful way to learn how scientists classify life.
  • Meet live animals up close, including a Madagascar hissing cockroach, a tarantula, and a frog. These real‑life encounters help children understand habitats, adaptations, and the diversity of life on Earth.
  • Explore biomimicry, discovering how plants and animals inspire human inventions in medicine, engineering, fashion, transportation, and more.
  • Open discovery drawers filled with skulls, insects, rocks, and minerals to see how scientists use classification to understand the natural world.
  • Connect culture and nature by examining how humans use natural materials to create pottery, clothing, jewelry, and other cultural treasures.

Every corner of the exhibit encourages kids to touch, observe, question, and imagine the true heart of scientific discovery.

A Gift to the Community

This exciting new exhibit is made possible through the generous support of The Gary W. Rollins Foundation, helping Fernbank continue its mission to inspire wonder and deepen our connection to the natural world.
